@Photopreneur Monthly Competition – Theme: Light is Everything!

COMPETITION: Light is Everything

This month we focus on one thing that changes everything. Light.

Your challenge is to take a photo where light is the hero. Not just something that is there, but something that shapes the image.

We are looking for how you see and use light in real moments. Think early morning at the sea. Late afternoon shadows. Strong midday contrast. Soft evening glow.

What to focus on:

Finding good light

- Look for soft, natural light and position your subject well

Working with difficult light

- Use harsh sun or low light in a controlled way

Using light creatively

- Backlighting, shadows and contrast that add mood

Mobile tips:

- Tap to focus and adjust exposure before you shoot

- Avoid blown out skies by lowering brightness slightly

- Keep your lens clean, especially outdoors

Submission guidelines:

- One image per member

- Two images for paid members

- Minimum 24 megapixel image

- Mobile phone only

- No heavy filters or over editing

- Keep it natural

What we are looking for:

- Strong use of light

- Clear subject

- A natural and usable image

Light is the difference between average and powerful.

Now show us how you see it.

Previous Competitions

April 2026 Competition: Visual Storytelling (closed)

This month’s theme is: Visual Storytelling.

The goal is to capture an image that does more than show a subject. It should suggest a moment, mood, or situation that tells a story.

Entries will be judged on four key criteria:

1.        Subject and Context

Show a clear subject and include enough of the environment to help explain the scene.

2.        Leading the Eye

Use composition, lines, light, or framing to guide the viewer naturally toward the subject.

3.        Moment Selection

Strong storytelling often depends on timing. Look for a moment of action, gesture, or interaction that completes the image.

4.        Emotional Impact

The photograph should create a feeling or mood that encourages the viewer to look a little longer.

March 2026 competition: Trees - Sell-Ready Photos (closed)

Theme: Trees

(Simple subject. Serious standard.)

This is not just another photo competition.

This is about learning to create sell-ready images: photographs that meet real-world marketplace standards and could actually generate income online.

We are deliberately keeping the subject simple (Trees), because the technical execution is the real challenge.

This is the toughest criteria we’ve set so far, and it’s designed for those who are serious about growing along the learning curve.

Beginners: don’t panic.

Our Paid articles break this down step-by-step, and Jeff is available on WhatsApp if you get stuck.

Why Trees?

Trees are:

  • Universally marketable

  • Symbolic (growth, grounding, strength, nature, sustainability)

  • Commercially versatile

  • Technically challenging in light and exposure

Simple subject. Professional execution.

If we’re building photographers who want to earn, we must start thinking like image buyers.

Let’s raise the standard.
Let’s build sell-ready portfolios.

Ready? Go shoot.

February 2026 Competition: Shoot with Intent (closed)

This month, we invite you to slow down and get intentional.

Before you press the shutter, ask yourself one powerful question:

“Who is this photo for?”

Not:

  • Is this pretty?

  • Will people like this?

  • Would I post this on Instagram?

Instead:

  • Is this for a buyer?

  • A specific type of client?

  • A brand or industry?

  • Portfolio growth?

  • A long-term body of work?

  • Or to define my own photographic identity?

January 2026 Competition: Simple Composition (closed)

January’s competition is officially open! Get ready to kick off the year with strong, intentional images.

As always, our competitions run monthly and are directly linked to the Academy content, so what you’re learning is exactly what you’re shooting. No random themes, no guesswork.

Entry window: 10 – 20 January.
January focus: Simple composition that works every time

This month, we’re keeping things clean, practical, and effective, working with:

·         Rule of Thirds

·         Golden Ratio

·         Leading Lines

·         Grid settings (yes, still your friend)

Use the month to practice, experiment, and refine; then submit one image that best reflects your understanding of the concepts covered.
